The Countess of Brecknock has been providing respite and palliative care for terminally-ill adults since September 1990. A first class nursing and continuing care team ensure that patients in the six-bed unit are as comfortable as possible during the final stages of their illness. The Hospice is able to provide a short stay facility to regulate symptoms and pain control, with patients returning home for many months of improved quality of life - possibly before readmission for terminal care. Respite care is also available to provide a welcome rest for relatives who normally care for patients at home. The Hospice Day Care Centre offers an active day with professional supervision for ten patients - a break from routine for the patients and respite for their full-time carers. In a calm, quiet atmosphere patents can relax, share their problems, seek reassurance or simply enjoy one another's company. The Hospice also has an important role to play in sympathetically supporting and caring for the family carers, who dedicate their lives to the comfort of their terminally-ill relatives. The use of a family room at the Hospice, furnished with a kitchen and overnight accommodation, relieve some of the strain of visiting patients in the final stages of their illness.
